Annie’s Angels Heavenly Ball 03.26.11 | Portsmouth, NH Charity Event Photography

The Heavenly Ball, now in it’s third year is such an amazing event. Hosted by the Annie’s Angels memorial fund the event raises money for families who’s lives have been affected by any number of scary, heart wrenching illnesses. Bill & Di and the rest of the folks who make it happen really truly know how to make it happen. This year the ball was hosted at the new, gorgeous, Portsmouth Harbor Events in downtown Portsmouth, NH.

Live entertainment speckled the evening that was also full of great food, great prizes and great company.

The sultry Sandy from Salon 72 in Stratham was working the 5050 raffle with every little bit that she had!

Bill updated us all on the work they’d done over the past year and the families they’d been able to help. They’ve even made a submission to Extreme Home Makeover for one family in need.

And the star of the Heavenly Ball, also in his third year — Mr. JJ <3

Plenty of friends were there to show their support — including a surprise visit from their good friend Ralphie — and what a great surprise it was!

Then the dancing started and kept going long into the night.

Being part of this adventure is always a great time! Be sure to check out more about how you can help or donate at Annie’s Angels website!

Caleb Cook RMS Fund Benefit 02.19.11 | Seacoast, NH Charity Event Photographer

I was honored to be asked to photograph this amazing benefit for the Caleb Cook RMS fund. Caleb, 7, was diagnosed last year with rhabdomyosarcoma — or RMS, a rare childhood cancer which effects only 1 in 150 children each year. Foster’s Daily Democrat did a great write up on the family, go read it here.

The event was held at the beautiful Regatta Room in Eliot, ME and featured the local band Blind Spot for some great entertainment. There were also tables and tables of silent auction items, a candy cart, door prizes and a 5050 raffle! This gang had it together!

Hello candy! Oh Almond Joy — How I adore you!

Just a few of the silent auction items!

A few of the silent auction items — this bear nearly started a bidding war! And on the right is a purse made with can tabs — It was really cool!

Amy was part of the Kappa Delta sorority at UNH and her sisters were huge in helping to coördinate and run the event!

The event would not have been possible with out the planning committee — a group of fabulous amazing empowering women!

Sold Out — which is AWESOME! Tables were full of people filling out raffle tickets and noshing on the yummy food.

And Caleb was involved in every aspect of the evening — raffles included — hoping to win a new bike!

Poised and gracious, for any age, let alone 7, he got up on stage and thanked everyone for coming and kicked off the band’s performance. But they had something up their sleeve and surprised him with his very own guitar –he was totally shocked and excited.

And then he helped them rock out to their opening number.

Once the band got going people started dancing -

Age was no matter, a good time was had by all!

The 5050 raffle winner — who so generously donated all her winnings back to the fund.

And a few photos to celebrate Caleb and his family!

To view or purchase photos from the entire event, visit http://melissakoren.com/calebcook2011.htm — 10% of all proceeds will be donated back to the Caleb Cook RMS fund, or you can donate directly from their website http://www.ccrmsfund.bbnow.org/donate.php

The benefit raised over $20,000 which is outstanding! It was humbling to be involved. Thank you Cook Family, for allowing me to witness this amazing event!

Truffle + Tavern Annual Toys for Tots Drive 12.16.10 | Exeter NH Charity Event Photography

If you’re a regular reader, you know by know that Tavern at River’s Edge in Exeter is one of our frequented establishments. When owner Jeff asked me to come take some photos of their annual Toys for Tots drive featuring Dave Gerard +Truffle I couldn’t say no.

Dave & the band are a lot of fun.

They’re sure to make you tap your toes, or better yet, get up and dance!

The Tavern staff is quite the musical bunch, Keith the chef and Jon one of the bartenders were in on the action for a few songs.

And Jeff split his time between tending bar and playing the back up bells!

Warm, cozy & romantic — Truffle and Tavern are both great date nights!

Or just a night out on the town with friends!

All that fun AND a great cause — their sleigh runneth over! (As long as it doesn’t runneth over grandma!) ;)

Truffle will be making it’s return to Tavern on May 26th! Make sure you stop by and celebrate the start of summer with good food, music & company!

Morgado Family Photos 10.31.10 | Exeter, NH Family Photography

I have been known to donate gift certificates to a few of my friends who are involved in various charities. Jess won one such certificate in a breast cancer fundraiser last spring. I was excited to meet her and her family for some awesome fall photos downtown Exeter.

I’m pretty sure her boys didn’t want to dress up as models for halloween, but they were the BEST listeners and great fun!

Of course, it’s easy to have fun when there are mounds and mounds of leaves around.

and then the lady with the camera tells you to go ahead and throw them RIGHT AT HER. He looks so determined.. and SO pleased with himself!

They really were the cutest little goober munchkins!

Thank you Jess for your support in the fight against breast cancer, and for sharing your amazing family with me!

Heavenly Ball 2010

The DaGiau family is near and dear to my heart. They provided me the opportunity to shoot my first wedding for their daughter Stephie and they’ll tell anyone who asks that I’m the photographer they want. They also serve up some mad yummy food out of their Italian Kitchen in Stratham. The Valerio’s Italian –all-the-Way is becoming somewhat of a legend in and of itself.

They also founded the Annie’s Angels foundation - a worthwhile cause if ever there was one. Last year’s first Heavenly Ball was a huge success and this year it was planned for the Sheraton Harborside Grand Ballroom. (Where the only disappointment was that there wasn’t more brie to be had..)

Local businesses donate items for a silent auction. We even got a bottle of the much anticipated Kate the Great and it was DELICIOUS!

And you could by 5050 raffle tickets by the arms length — always a big hit!

And here are your hosts with the most(s)! Bill always gives a wonderful talk on their mission & their accomplishments.

Back again this year was JR from WHEB and Di & Bill’s daughter — my first bride — Stephie — who flexed her vocal prowess for the audience.

Holy Canoli!

They had the best idea! Since you can make a donation online at any time (you too can donate, here!) they set up some laptops onsite so that people could make a secure donation via credit/debit card in case they forgot their checkbook.

Stephie’s son JJ is calling to make sure everyone he knows has made a donation!

Chris & Sandy are good friends of Annie’s Angels, and a very good time. I think Sandy was just there for the swag though…

And they danced away into fundraising bliss!

This is a great event full of fun and promise and the possibility of scoring some great silent auction stuff! I’ll be sure to post the details of next years event so keep an eye out and come on down and have some fun!

I am honored to be the “official photographer” for the Annie’s Angels Memorial Fund. The work that Bill, Di & their crew do is amazing. This years fundraiser was the 1st Annual Heavenly Ball at the New England Center in Durham, NH.

Welcome!
heavenlyball001

Bill & Di’s daugther Stephanie came up from NJ for the occasion and I finally got to meet baby J. He’s such an adorable chunky monkey! Stephanie was my first bride ever and she will always hold a very special place in my heart! It’s so exciting to keep in touch with her and watch her family grow!

A good friend of the Memorial Fund, WERZ’s Ralphie Marino was the MC for the evening.
heavenlyball007

WHEB’s JR was the fabulous DJ for the evening. He did a great job keeping people up and dancing. Shortly after that one of my October couples booked him for their wedding. It was purely coincidence but I was thrilled to hear they’d chosen him and I look forward to working with him again!

heavenlyball010

And BOY did they dance!! This couple had moves like no other! They rocked it out on the dance floor all night long complete with dips!

Stephie has a ritual of singing at all the Annie’s Angel’s BBQ’s so they asked her to sing at the Ball and of course she obliged. She totally nailed her rendition of Black Velvet.

Standing on the Side of Love

Standing on the Side of Love: A Family-Friendly Celebration of NH’s Civil Union Law January 1, 2008, Noon — 3PM South Church UU, State Street Portsmouth, NH

I was honored to be asked to photograph this once in a lifetime event celebrating the institution of NH Civil Unions. Although yet another snow storm was in our forecast, 250 people attended the well planned worship/concert/potluck/PARTY! There was a plethora of media coverage — and while that’s all well and good, there were a few times I couldn’t get another photographer out of my shot! In all though, it was quite a successful day — and as the Rev. Roberta Finkelstein, succinctly summed up “We let ourselves celebrate and honor this moment. But let this day also remind us that full marriage equality is still in our future in New Hampshire if we continue to make it so.”
